Comentariu Literar La Poezia Plumb De Iarna De George Bacovia
Existentialism, the existential human individual, is not simply an articulation of one’s being, but an interpretation of that being mediated by the methods and means through which one characterizes oneself. The existentialist attends to what he or she can become in relation to others - how they behave in front of them, what they deem worthy or not. It is for this reason that individuals must be self-aware in order to make sense of their actions. However, when it comes to scholars (or asking questions) there aremany individuals who are either too modest or too proud about the insights they require from others; George Bacovia was no different during his lifetime. He was recognized as a poet with talent and promise, but never reached full proto-existentialist potential. Bacovia is recognized as one of the “minor poets” of Romania. He wrote poems in French and Romanian, though he considered his writing in French to be superior to his writing in Romanian. This self-assessment may have been a result of the type of education he received while he was a student at University, but more likely due to his pride that had him consider himself a part of the Western world rather than the people that surrounded him. In general, Bacovia was quite proud of his education and believed that he was more of a “man of letters” than a poet. He would more likely question the need of a poem to be expressed in a certain way rather than to ask for it express itself. Bacovia did not believe in the religion of his country. He had a difficult relationship with Catholicism and throughout his life felt that there were many flaws that needed to be corrected in the Romanian church. Bacovia did not agree with many fundamental beliefs of the Romanians at the time, including their lack of independence, their belief in superstitions, and their lack of desire for education beyond primary school. As such, he did not believe in the traditional values of an Eastern Orthodox society. Because of this, Bacovia developed a distaste for his home country and instead believed that he was living in a cultural wasteland. In his poetry, Bacovia’s existentialist elements emerge through what can be described as a “self-challenge”. This challenge is to “become the being one wishes to be”, but without having much direction from society or family to do so. In this way, Bacovia was never sure of his identity because he did not have much guidance from others around him. Bacovia’s poetry was not completely devoid of hope; in fact, he is recognized as a Romanian symbolist and is known for his vivid imagery and ability to capture the essence of what life is like for a human. Bacovia wrote in English and French and created an “antipoetic” style that was challenging to readers at the time; however, he is now considered one of the great poets in Romanian history.
